RoughRiders Run Down Herd

(AP) In a rare back to back the Houston RoughRiders completed their two game sweep of the Edmonton Herd this season with a 31-23 home victory, a week after beating the Herd 29-24 on the road. The Houston defense can take most of the credit after holding Herd star QB Richard Mata to only 28 completions in 70 attempts for both games, and the offense which many pundits called 'unstoppable' to only 246 total yards in the most recent game. After the game the GM for Houston had this to say. "Well the Herd GM was quoted as going around town telling everyone 'I just realized that we won our 20th straight regular season game!'...and we took that personally. Our players are professionals, and usually they don't buy into all the off the field trash talk, but you have to admit it fires you up just a little." On the season the RoughRiders are now 5-0 and travel to face the BCFC Bears this weekend. The Bears are 3-2 but lost star WR Chris Holt to a stress fracture in his foot and he's been ruled out this week. With Alberto Gabriel 'doubtful' with patella tendinitis look for TE Marlon Ostrander and RB Bruce Suarez to pick up the slack. Suarez, who is #2 in all-time rushing yards, took the place of departed running back James Keys, the BFL's all-time leading rushing, who now plays in Seattle. On the injury side of things for Houston they suffered a huge loss when starting center Dwain Reyes was lost for the season during the first quarter of last weeks game. He buckled to the ground without being touched and Herd LB Edward Allen was able to sack David Reyes for a seven yard loss. He was carted off the field and was diagnosed with a ruptured Achilles which will sideline him until 1995. The RoughRiders will be moving some pieces around in order to try and fill in the gap.

Jim Nox : Seattle Totems
Certainly, this defense will have a good game. Really this could go either way, but you will never get me to admit it.

I love what they are doing in Houston coaching-wise. Head coach Justin Harris is a major reason they will win this game. He is running a great offense. He is innovative with his defense. He preperation is impeccable.

Week 2: QB Richard Mata (EDM) wins Offensive Player of the Week

Jim Nox : Edmonton Herd
I am really on the fence for this one, but I stand my prediction.

Darren Francis : Edmonton Herd
When you consider the two rosters, I see that you have to look at this DE named Bradley Oglesby. I expect everyone knows this guy will be a wrecking ball.

Gilman a Pharaohs legend

Reports out of Memphis tell us that Joel Gilman - RB is among the favorites in his generation for the future hall of fame. Clearly, after 7 seasons in the league, playing at his level, it is hard to dispute. Hall of fame or not, Gilman is a legend, not only in Memphis, but nationally. The Pharaohs have made no comment on the subject before, but seem fairly satisfied with the whole thing.

Week 1: QB Richard Mata (EDM) wins Offensive Player of the Week

Jeremy Piper : New Orleans Reapers

Mary Moore : New Orleans Reapers
People tend to underestimate their offense.

In this game, we have to acknowledge that the defense will struggle to counter Ricky Bryant - G. Watch out for him.

QB Zackary Robinson (WIN) goes #1 overall!

NEW YORK -- The Windsor Gamblers drafted Zackary Robinson #1 overall in the 1994 draft. The 6' 2" QB fits the team's needs perfectly. Said Gamblers general manager: "It's up to us to develop him and get good players around him."

"The great thing about the game of football is, it's a team game," Robinson said on a conference call. "I'm just going to be one piece of the puzzle."

Moore and Nox Mock Draft

Pick 1: Windsor Gamblers
Larry Moore: Morgan Goodin - DT
There is a quickness to his step. He closes down in a hurry. Coaches like guys who tackle well. Makes smart decisions. Do not be afraid to draft a position of need here. This kid is well worthy of a pick this early. Perfect situation for him, and great fit for the team.

Jim Nox: Morgan Goodin - DT
Explosive first step. Has the speed to become a true sack machine. He is a well developed tackler, this is something teams look for. It saves a lot of time when the fundamentals are good. Makes smart decisions. He will get a great chance to earn the starting job. He fits what they are looking for. He is a solid player. Cannot go wrong here.

Pick 2: Seattle Totems
Larry Moore: Micheal Brown - G
Even though this is a youngster right out of college, he is strong like a grown man. They will be happy to get him, they could use an upgrade at the position, and he certainly fits the bill. A franchise caliber player. Just what they have been looking for.

Jim Nox: Alonso Churchill - CB
I like the way he tackles. Wraps up the ball carrier and drags him down. No need to take chances. They almost have to make this pick. You do not want to look back in five years and see this kid on another team knowing he could have been yours.

Pick 3: Memphis Pharaohs
Larry Moore: Charles Camp - TE
Reacts intelligently on the field. Do not be afraid to draft a position of need here. This kid is well worthy of a pick this early. Perfect situation for him, and great fit for the team.

Jim Nox: Roy Tice - RB
He has some quickness to his cuts. Great strength for a Running Back. Are there other guys worth picking here? Sure, but none of them fit this well with what they need, and he is a solid talent.

Pick 4: BCFC Bears
Larry Moore: Patrick Jacobsen - T
If you go to his tape, you will se he run blocks very well. Takes in instructions well. They need playmakers at this position. This is what they are getting here. Solid pick.

Jim Nox: Patrick Jacobsen - T
This kid is already a pretty good blocker in the running game. He will only get better as he refines his technique. He is alert and makes smart decisions to developments in the play. Some might say this is a 'need' pick, but we must remember, this is a really good player as well. He will contribute early and often. No losers here.

Pick 5: Toronto North
Larry Moore: Edwin Steele - TE
Fast enough to challenge good cornerbacks in man coverage. And enough speed to threaten the deep ball. You need him, just get him already.

Jim Nox: Morton Sprague - WR
This kid puts in the work. He is fundamentally a good kid. You rarely see him commit stupid penalties. If you miss the tackle, you will not catch this kid. They need playmakers at this position. This is what they are getting here. Solid pick.

Pick 6: New Orleans Reapers
Larry Moore: Alonso Churchill - CB
Scouts like how well he tackles. He addresses a need for them.

Jim Nox: Victor Cushman - WR
Due to his work ethic, this kid is very coachable. This kid breeds synergy, teams play better when he is on the field. This is the kind of kid you want to promote the game. Well behaved, loves the game, and respectful. Nice speed. Will keep defenses honest. Fits nicely with their needs. Fits nicely with the draft spot. Getting it right is important with these early picks. This guy is right.

Pick 7: Edmonton Herd
Larry Moore: Mark Greenwood - LB
Amazing strength for the position. Makes him versatile, and tells of his high ceiling. When the available talent fits what you need, there is reason to celebrate. They are getting a great talent who will serve them for many years.

Jim Nox: Charles Camp - TE
Reacts with good instincts. Take the blue-chip player. Do not worry about sexier picks. He fits what you need and the quality is there.

Pick 8: Memphis Pharaohs
Larry Moore: Terry Fields - C
If you ask around, everyone will tell you, this kid is all about the team. Amazing strength given his young age. This kid can bench press a minibus. They will be happy to get him, they could use an upgrade at the position, and he certainly fits the bill. A franchise caliber player. Just what they have been looking for.

Jim Nox: Zackary Robinson - QB
His good natured behavior, even toward opponents have earned him some criticism, but also an awful lot of respect. Well liked in the locker room. He does not get fooled by coverages often. Will make tight throws. Throws with purpose and power. They gotta be happy to get this guy. Such a talent and he fits their needs. I would imagine the war room is celebrating when they make this pick.

Pick 9: Windsor Gamblers
Larry Moore: Arnold Merrick - DT
Known for helping out teammates, if they hit a rough patch, whether it is on the field or in their personal lives. Solid talent that fits their needs. Really that is all there is to it. Perfect situation. Take the money and run.

Jim Nox: Arnold Merrick - DT
Known for helping out teammates, if they hit a rough patch, whether it is on the field or in their personal lives. Nothing to think about here. Pick up the kid, bring him into the building, put him om the field.

Pick 10: Seattle Totems
Larry Moore: Steven Donato - SS
His college coaches talk highly of his work ethic. In addition to his own role, this kid doubles as glue. He makes everyone on the field play as a team. Tackles with nice fundamentals. People usually go down. They gotta be happy to get this guy. Such a talent and he fits their needs. I would imagine the war room is celebrating when they make this pick.

Jim Nox: Micheal Brown - G
Amazing strength given his young age. This kid can bench press a minibus. They should not be afraid to fill a need here. He will start day one. Quality pick right here.
